Services for the Deceased
St John’s Church recognizes that when a beloved one passes away it is important to understand that grief and sorry are to be honored with dignity and respect. We provide specific services in a manner that the Liturgy for the Dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all its meaning in the Resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead we too shall be raised. Because of this promise, the liturgy is characterized by joy, but this joy does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the near presence of our Lord we sorrow in sympathy for those who mourn.
Baptized Christians are properly buried from the church, but for pastoral reasons, the funeral service may be held at a funeral home or graveside. There are three types of services for the departed.:
- A funeral is a liturgy for the dead with the body present, either in a coffin or as ashes in an urn. It may be held in the church, at the graveside or in a funeral home.
- A committal is a brief liturgy usually following a funeral. It may also be held at the graveside. If ashes are the final disposition of the body, the urn may be kept at home or buried at a cemetery. St john’s has a sacred space located in the church for the permanent keeping of cremains (ashes) in urns. It is called the Columbarium. Special arrangements to use this space can be made by calling the clergy at the church office.
- A memorial service is a liturgy without either the body or ashes present. It can be held at any time after death, from a few days to a few years. Its use may be at the time of an anniversity or other meaningful event in the deceased life.
If anyone is gravely ill or near death, the family is asked to please call the clergy of the church for immediate pastoral care and/or to make funerary arrangements. Call: 262-0897
